This homeowner in Newcastle-under-Lyme contacted us about replacing their existing driveway, which had become tired and outdated. While it was functional, it no longer matched the quality of their beautifully maintained property and they wanted a modern upgrade that would enhance their home’s kerb appeal.

They required a complete replacement of the front driveway and side access path – a substantial 80m² project that would completely transform the entrance to their property.

Our Solution

We recommended premium block paving in a sophisticated multi-tonal palette combining light grey and mid-grey tones. This creates natural variation and visual interest across the large surface area.

Charcoal borders and accents were strategically positioned to define edges and create visual flow. The darker tones provide striking contrast and guide the eye from the driveway entrance, along the property frontage, and down the side access path.

The side path was completed in solid charcoal paving, creating a bold, cohesive look that connects seamlessly with the main driveway.

How we completed this transformation

The team began by protecting the property and surrounding areas. The old driveway surface was broken up and removed, along with the deteriorated sub-base material. Everything was loaded and taken away for proper disposal. The area was excavated to the correct depth across both the main driveway and side access path. MOT Type 1 hardcore was delivered and spread across the entire 80m² area. The team compacted this in layers to create a rock-solid foundation. Concrete edge restraints were installed around all perimeters. Drainage channels were positioned and secured. By day's end, the groundwork was complete and ready for paving.

Sharp sand bedding was screeded across the prepared base to a precise level. Block laying commenced with the multi-tonal grey paving installed across the main driveway area in a herringbone pattern for maximum strength. Charcoal borders were positioned along key edges and the Aco drainage channel was integrated seamlessly. The side access path was completed in solid charcoal paving, creating a bold visual connection. All blocks were expertly cut to fit perfectly around the garage, entrance step, and property boundaries. Jointing sand was thoroughly swept into all gaps and the entire surface compacted to lock everything together. A final detailed cleanup was completed, with all equipment removed and the surrounding area washed down, leaving the property spotless.

Ted from Maughan construction based in Stoke on Trent installed my new driveway using Tobermore Shannon slate with a double charcoal border.Ted visited my property to give a detailed explanation of what and how best to proceed with the installation.I was given a quote and booked him in for the following week. Ted and his team worked hard and were diligent and methodical in their work, Ted stayed behind after for the two day installation to ensure the work met his high standards.The second day the sand and blocks were installed and the rest of the team did an amazing job installing the block kerb edgings and made an impressive curved bed which was later dressed with top soil.The drain cover-details were perfect and all the finishing touches and minute detail made the finished job look amazingThe team worked in a very clean and tidy manner and any mess was cleared and washed down including pavements and roads.The team respected my wishes and anything I asked to be altered was dealt with instantly.I would 100% recommend the company and their work.

Very very very pleased with our new driveway. Couldn’t rate Ted and his team highly enough, thanks guys!Day 1 – Ted turned up with 4 very pleasant guys at 7.30am as promised and by 6pm, dug out and spoil removed, hardcore down and compacted.Day 2 – Again turned up at 7.30am and by 11.30am, sand down and compacted level and Tegula paving all laid. Weather wasn’t on his side, so had to come back at 4.30pm to sand it all in once it had dried out.I would highly recommend Maughan Construction to anybody who wants quality work done fast!
