Tegula paving gives you the strength of block paving with a tumbled, weathered edge that suits older properties far better than a sharp modern block. Installed across Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stafford and Crewe from £70 per square metre.

Why Choose Tegula Paving Driveways?
Tegula sits between standard block paving and natural stone. It carries vehicle weight the same way a block driveway does, but the rumbled edges and varied tones give it a settled, older look straight off the pallet. That makes it the surface we recommend most often for period properties across North Staffordshire.
The tumbled edge and mixed tones sit naturally against Victorian and Edwardian brickwork, which is most of the housing stock around Penkhull, Hartshill and Burslem. A sharp-edged modern block can look wrong on those properties. Tegula does not.
Laid on a properly compacted sub-base, tegula handles daily car use without rutting or shifting. It is block paving underneath the finish, so it performs like block paving.
If a section is damaged or you need access to a pipe underneath, individual blocks come up and go back down. No resurfacing the whole driveway to fix one patch.
Bracken, harvest, traditional, slate and charcoal are the common choices. We bring samples to the site visit so you can hold them against your own brickwork rather than guessing from a screen.

Examples of our work
Maughan Construction are able to undertake any type of driveway renovation across Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire.
Maughan Construction install tegula paving driveways across Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stafford, Crewe, Congleton, Biddulph and the surrounding parts of Staffordshire and Cheshire. Ted Maughan has been laying paving for over 30 years and the business holds more than 435 five-star reviews, nearly all of them from within twenty miles of the yard.
Tegula is priced from £70 per square metre installed, in line with standard block paving. That covers excavation, sub-base, edging, laying and jointing. A single driveway of 20 to 30 square metres works out at roughly £1,400 to £2,100, and a double of 45 to 60 square metres at £3,150 to £4,200. Our tegula paving guide covers what pushes those figures up or down.
Tegula is a concrete block with rumbled edges and a mottled surface, made to look like it has been down for fifty years on the day it goes in. It comes in three sizes laid together in a random pattern, which is what stops it reading as a repeating grid. Marshalls make the original, and it is what most people mean when they ask for tegula.
Compared with standard block paving it costs slightly more per square metre and takes marginally longer to lay because of the mixed sizes. Compared with natural stone it costs considerably less and is far more predictable underfoot. If you are weighing tegula against a plain block, the block paving ideas guide shows both side by side.
Tegula is only as good as the base under it. Stoke-on-Trent sits on heavy clay across much of the city, particularly around Bucknall, Meir and Blurton, and clay holds water and heaves when it freezes. The older terraced streets in Hanley, Burslem and Tunstall bring a different problem: made ground left over from the pottery and mining years, which can vary within a single plot.
We dig, look at what is actually there, and specify the sub-base depth to suit. Every quote we write states the depth of hardcore, how it will be compacted and where the water is going. A tegula driveway laid on an inadequate base will sink in wheel tracks within a few winters, and no amount of quality in the blocks themselves will prevent it.
Edge restraint is not optional on any block surface. Without it the perimeter blocks migrate outwards, the pattern opens up and the whole thing loosens from the edges inwards. We haunch the edging in concrete on every job.
Jointing sand is brushed in and vibrated down so it packs into every gap. Get this wrong and the blocks move independently instead of locking together. Once it is down, keeping the joints full and the surface clean is most of the maintenance, and our guide to cleaning block paving covers the rest.

Our Process
Our proven process ensures a professional, long-lasting installation every time.
The existing surface comes up and we excavate to the right depth for the ground conditions on your plot, not a standard depth applied everywhere regardless.
Hardcore is laid and compacted in layers, then edging is haunched in concrete to restrain the perimeter and hold the pattern tight for the life of the driveway.
Blocks are laid in the chosen pattern, mixing sizes and drawing from several packs at once so the colour variation spreads evenly across the whole driveway.
Kiln-dried sand is brushed in and vibrated down to lock the surface together. Ted walks the finished job with you, and you pay nothing until you are happy with it.
Common Questions
Here are the most common questions we get asked about tegula paving driveways in Stoke-on-Trent and across Staffordshire.
Tegula starts at £70 per square metre fully installed, the same as standard block paving. A single driveway of 20 to 30 square metres works out at roughly £1,400 to £2,100, and a double of 45 to 60 square metres at £3,150 to £4,200. That covers excavation, sub-base, edging, laying and jointing. Ground conditions, access and how much material needs carting away all move the final figure, which is why we quote after a site visit.
Tegula has tumbled edges and a mottled surface designed to look weathered from day one, and it comes in three sizes laid together in a random pattern. Standard block paving has sharp edges, a uniform colour and a single size. Structurally they perform the same. The difference is entirely in how they look, and tegula tends to suit older properties better.
Three to five days for a standard residential driveway. The mixed block sizes take slightly longer to lay than uniform blocks. Larger jobs, or ones needing significant drainage or kerbing work, take longer and we will give you the timescale in writing before we start.
Yes. Individual blocks lift out and go back in without disturbing the surrounding area, which is one of the main practical advantages over a poured or rolled surface. We leave you spare blocks from the same batch at the end of every job so any future repair matches.
Twenty to thirty years, assuming the groundwork was done properly. Almost every failed block driveway we get called to failed underneath rather than on top. Keeping the joints topped up with kiln-dried sand and clearing standing water will push it towards the top of that range.
