Why Choose Patio Installations?
A patio is the cheapest way to make a garden usable. Lawns in this part of Staffordshire sit on clay and stay wet from October to April, which puts furniture out of action for half the year. A properly laid patio with the right falls stays dry and stays put.
Clay ground holds water and lawns turn to mud from autumn onwards. A patio with correct drainage falls gives you a dry, solid surface to walk on and put furniture on all year.
A well-laid patio is one of the cheaper improvements that shows up in a valuation, particularly on the smaller terraced gardens common across Hanley, Burslem and Longton where usable outdoor space is at a premium.
A sweep and a wash once or twice a year is the whole job. Compare that with decking, which needs oiling every spring and replacing inside fifteen years.
Sloping plots, awkward corners and split levels are normal round here. Steps, retaining walls and terraced sections turn those into features rather than problems.
We have hundreds of happy customers
We have the most 5* reviews of any driveway company in Stoke on Trent and we are very proud of this fact!
Examples of our work
Maughan Construction are able to undertake any type of driveway renovation across Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire.
Maughan Construction install patios across Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stafford, Crewe, Congleton, Biddulph and the surrounding parts of Staffordshire and Cheshire. Ted Maughan has been laying paving for over 30 years and the business holds more than 435 five-star reviews, nearly all from within twenty miles of the yard.
We lay Indian sandstone, porcelain, limestone, block paved and concrete flag patios. Which one suits you depends on the property, the aspect of the garden and the budget, and we bring samples to the site visit so you can hold them against your own brickwork rather than picking from a screen.
Indian sandstone is the most requested patio material across Stoke-on-Trent and has been for years. It costs £60 to £90 per square metre installed, weathers into a softer colour over time, and suits the red brick that dominates the local housing stock. It is porous, so it wants sealing.
Porcelain costs £90 to £150 per square metre installed and is the choice for contemporary properties and for anyone who does not want to think about the patio again. It does not stain, it does not need sealing, and moss struggles to get a hold. It is unforgiving on the laying though, because the slabs are perfectly uniform and any error in level shows immediately.
Concrete flags start around £40 to £60 per square metre installed. Functional rather than beautiful, and a sensible option for a side return, a bin store or a shed base.
Block paved patios use the same blocks as a driveway and work well when you want the front and back of the property to match. They also handle a hot tub or a heavy planter better than a thin flag will.
A typical 20 square metre patio, roughly 4m by 5m, lands between £1,200 and £3,000 depending on material and complexity. Our guide to patio installation costs in Stoke-on-Trent breaks the figures down further, and patios in Stoke-on-Trent covers design ideas alongside the materials.
Most patio failures we get called out to are drainage failures, not paving failures. Water sitting on the surface causes the algae, the staining and the frost damage, and water running the wrong way ends up against the house.
Every patio we lay is set to a fall of roughly 1 in 80, running away from the property. On the terraced streets around Penkhull, Fenton and Tunstall, where the garden often sits higher than the house and space is tight, that fall has to be planned before a single slab goes down. We also keep the finished level at least 150mm below the damp proof course, which is a building regulation and not optional, whatever anyone else has quoted you.
Stoke-on-Trent sits on heavy clay across most of the city, particularly around Bucknall, Meir and Blurton. Clay holds water, swells and shrinks with the seasons, and lifts anything laid on a thin base. The older streets bring made ground left over from the pottery and mining years, which can vary within a single garden.
We dig, look at what is actually there, and specify the sub-base depth accordingly. Every quote states the excavation depth, the compaction method and where the water is going. A quote that only gives you a price per square metre is not telling you the thing that decides whether the patio is still level in ten years.

Plenty of customers do the front and the back in the same visit. The team is already on site, the muck away is already booked, and it works out cheaper than two separate jobs months apart. If you are weighing up what surface suits where, paving in Stoke-on-Trent compares the options.

Our Process
Our proven process ensures a professional, long-lasting installation every time.
We mark out the exact area and excavate to 150 to 200mm depending on ground conditions, clearing all topsoil, turf and roots. Levels are set at this stage, including the fall away from the house and the drop below the damp proof course.
MOT Type 1 hardcore goes in and is compacted in layers rather than all at once. The fall is built into the base, not corrected later with mortar, which is where a lot of patios go wrong.
A 30 to 40mm mortar bed is laid and each slab is fully bedded with no voids underneath. Voids are what crack slabs a year down the line. Levels are checked against string lines as we go, not at the end.
Joints are pointed, excess material is cleaned off before it stains, and Ted walks the finished patio with you. You pay nothing until you are happy with it.
Common Questions
Here are the most common questions we get asked about patio installations in Stoke-on-Trent and across Staffordshire.
It depends on the material. Concrete flags start around £40 to £60 per square metre installed, Indian sandstone and limestone run £60 to £90, and porcelain or granite sit at £90 to £150. A typical 20 square metre patio comes in between £1,200 and £3,000 including groundwork, sub-base, laying and jointing. Access, ground conditions and how much spoil needs carting away all move the figure, which is why we quote after a site visit rather than over the phone.
Indian sandstone is the most popular locally. It sits well against the red brick that dominates the housing stock here and offers good value at mid-range prices. Porcelain is the choice for contemporary properties and for anyone who does not want to seal or maintain anything, though it costs more. For traditional properties, limestone or reclaimed stone gives more character. We bring samples to the site visit so you can see them against your own house.
Three to seven days for most gardens. A small courtyard can be done in two or three. Larger jobs with multiple levels, steps or retaining walls can run to a fortnight. We avoid laying in heavy rain or frost because mortar needs to cure properly, so British weather occasionally moves a start date. You get the timescale in writing before we begin.
For a patio in a rear garden, almost never. Front gardens are different: a hard surface over five square metres draining onto a public highway needs either a permeable finish or drainage to a soakaway or border. Listed buildings and conservation area properties should check with Stoke-on-Trent City Council first, or Cheshire East if you are over towards Crewe. We design the drainage so this does not become your problem.
Yes, and sloping plots often end up looking better than flat ones. Terraced levels, steps and low retaining walls give a garden structure that a single flat rectangle does not. We assess the gradient during the site visit and talk through whether a single level with retaining walls, stepped terraces, or a gentle fall following the existing contours suits the space best.
