This homeowner in Trentham contacted us about a complete redesign of their front garden and driveway area. The existing setup included a deteriorating tarmac driveway and underutilized lawn space that had become difficult to maintain.

They wanted to maximize their parking area while creating a smart, modern entrance to their property. The project would require removing both the old tarmac and front lawn, then installing a substantial new driveway with improved boundary definition.

Our Solution

We recommended charcoal block paving in a herringbone pattern for maximum strength and visual appeal. This dark, contemporary finish creates a sleek, modern aesthetic that enhances the property’s kerb appeal.

A new brick boundary wall was constructed to define the property edge, topped with matching block paving coping stones. This provides both practical boundary definition and an attractive architectural feature.

How we completed this transformation

The team began by removing the existing tarmac driveway, breaking it up and loading for disposal. The front lawn was stripped away along with all topsoil and existing landscaping. The entire 60m² area was excavated to the required depth. Foundation trenches were dug for the new boundary wall. All waste materials were removed from site. By day's end, the area was fully cleared and ready for construction work.

The brick boundary wall was constructed using engineering bricks, built to proper height and finished with block paving coping stones. MOT Type 1 hardcore was delivered and spread across the entire driveway area. The team compacted this in layers to create a solid, stable foundation. Concrete edge restraints were installed around all perimeters. The sub-base was leveled and checked to ensure correct falls for drainage.

Sharp sand bedding was screeded across the prepared base to a precise level. Block laying commenced with the charcoal paving installed in a traditional herringbone pattern for maximum strength. The team worked methodically across the 60m² area, ensuring tight joints and perfect alignment. All edge blocks were cut precisely to fit around boundaries and the new wall. Kiln-dried jointing sand was swept into all joints and the entire surface compacted using a vibrating plate. Additional sand was applied and the process repeated. Final cleanup completed with all equipment removed and surrounding area washed down, leaving the property immaculate.

Ted from Maughan construction based in Stoke on Trent installed my new driveway using Tobermore Shannon slate with a double charcoal border.Ted visited my property to give a detailed explanation of what and how best to proceed with the installation.I was given a quote and booked him in for the following week. Ted and his team worked hard and were diligent and methodical in their work, Ted stayed behind after for the two day installation to ensure the work met his high standards.The second day the sand and blocks were installed and the rest of the team did an amazing job installing the block kerb edgings and made an impressive curved bed which was later dressed with top soil.The drain cover-details were perfect and all the finishing touches and minute detail made the finished job look amazingThe team worked in a very clean and tidy manner and any mess was cleared and washed down including pavements and roads.The team respected my wishes and anything I asked to be altered was dealt with instantly.I would 100% recommend the company and their work.

Very very very pleased with our new driveway. Couldn’t rate Ted and his team highly enough, thanks guys!Day 1 – Ted turned up with 4 very pleasant guys at 7.30am as promised and by 6pm, dug out and spoil removed, hardcore down and compacted.Day 2 – Again turned up at 7.30am and by 11.30am, sand down and compacted level and Tegula paving all laid. Weather wasn’t on his side, so had to come back at 4.30pm to sand it all in once it had dried out.I would highly recommend Maughan Construction to anybody who wants quality work done fast!
