Project Overview

Maughan Construction was asked to completely transform a large front garden in Trentham, Stoke-on-Trent. The existing lawn was tired and impractical, offering no hard standing and limiting the property’s kerb appeal. The brief was straightforward: remove all the lawn and replace it with a quality block paving driveway that would complement the red brick detailing on the house.

After discussing the options with Ted, the homeowners chose Shannon Duo blocks in Slate, finished with a contrasting Charcoal border. At 130m², this was a substantial installation, and the combination of the lighter central field with the darker border gives the finished driveway a clean, structured look that sits well against the brick facade.

How we completed this transformation

The first day was all groundwork. Ted and the team stripped out the full lawn area, excavating down to the correct depth to allow for the sub-base, bedding layer and block surface. The sweeping curved edge to the front of the driveway was set out at this stage, with kerb edging installed to define the shape before any fill went back in. Getting the levels right on day one is what determines how well the finished surface drains and sits, so this stage doesn't get rushed.

Day two was when the driveway started to take shape. The sub-base was compacted, the bedding sand was screeded level and the team began laying the Shannon Duo blocks in Slate. The Charcoal border course was laid first to define the edges, then the field was filled in using a stretcher bond pattern. At 130m², there's a lot of block to place, so this stage ran through to the end of the day with the majority of the surface down.

The final day covered the remaining block laying, cutting to fit along the edges and the house wall, compaction of the full surface with a plate vibrator, and kiln-dried sand brushed into the joints. Once the joints were filled and the surface given a final check, the site was cleared and the finished driveway was handed over to the homeowners.

The Result

The finished result is a significant improvement on what was there before. What was once an awkward lawn that served no real purpose is now a practical, well-drained driveway with enough space to park multiple vehicles comfortably. The Shannon Duo Slate palette works well with the Trentham housing stock, and the Charcoal border gives the job a finished quality that cheaper installations don't achieve. At 130m², this is the kind of project where preparation makes the difference. The three-day programme allowed the team to do the groundwork properly on day one, complete the bulk of the laying on day two, and hand over a finished and cleaned driveway on day three without cutting corners on compaction or jointing.
