This homeowner approached us wanting to transform their rear garden, which was entirely lawn, into a more practical and attractive outdoor space. They wanted a low-maintenance patio area that would provide a stable, usable surface for entertaining and relaxing.

The existing lawn took up the entire space behind their beautiful modern extension, but they wanted to maximize the usability of the area immediately adjacent to their bi-fold doors while maintaining some grass further out in the garden.

Create a level surface that matched perfectly with the extension threshold

Our Solution

We recommended premium block paving in a light grey multi-tonal finish with charcoal border accents. This contemporary color palette perfectly complements the modern extension and creates a clean, sophisticated outdoor space.

The patio was designed to extend from the bi-fold doors, creating an ideal entertaining area that flows seamlessly from indoor to outdoor living. The charcoal border adds definition and frames the patio beautifully against the remaining lawn.

The team arrived and marked out the patio area, carefully protecting the new extension and surrounding lawn. The existing turf was removed and the area excavated to the required depth. MOT Type 1 hardcore was delivered, spread, and compacted to create a solid foundation with proper drainage falls away from the house. Concrete edge restraints were installed to define the patio boundaries. Sharp sand bedding was screeded to a precise level, matching the extension threshold perfectly. Block laying commenced with the light grey paving installed across the main area and charcoal borders positioned for visual impact. All blocks were expertly cut to create clean lines against the remaining lawn. Jointing sand was applied and the surface compacted to lock everything in place. Final cleanup completed, leaving the garden tidy and the stunning new patio ready for immediate use.

Ted from Maughan construction based in Stoke on Trent installed my new driveway using Tobermore Shannon slate with a double charcoal border.Ted visited my property to give a detailed explanation of what and how best to proceed with the installation.I was given a quote and booked him in for the following week. Ted and his team worked hard and were diligent and methodical in their work, Ted stayed behind after for the two day installation to ensure the work met his high standards.The second day the sand and blocks were installed and the rest of the team did an amazing job installing the block kerb edgings and made an impressive curved bed which was later dressed with top soil.The drain cover-details were perfect and all the finishing touches and minute detail made the finished job look amazingThe team worked in a very clean and tidy manner and any mess was cleared and washed down including pavements and roads.The team respected my wishes and anything I asked to be altered was dealt with instantly.I would 100% recommend the company and their work.

Very very very pleased with our new driveway. Couldn’t rate Ted and his team highly enough, thanks guys!Day 1 – Ted turned up with 4 very pleasant guys at 7.30am as promised and by 6pm, dug out and spoil removed, hardcore down and compacted.Day 2 – Again turned up at 7.30am and by 11.30am, sand down and compacted level and Tegula paving all laid. Weather wasn’t on his side, so had to come back at 4.30pm to sand it all in once it had dried out.I would highly recommend Maughan Construction to anybody who wants quality work done fast!

From the initial consultation, we were treated respectfully and professionally and given a realistic timescale and cost for the work.The team worked diligently during the whole project, and even when there were complications due to existing issues with the previous driveway, Ted was completely transparent with the solutions, which were included into the project at an incredibly reasonable rate.
