The part nobody sees
The variable that decides whether a Crewe driveway lasts twenty years or five is not the tarmac or the blocks. It's what sits underneath them.
Crewe has mixed ground conditions. Some areas have sandier, free-draining soil. Others are heavier and hold water through the winter. A contractor who knows the town specifies sub-base depth to match the plot rather than laying the same 100mm everywhere and hoping for the best. A single-layer job with no proper edging looks perfect on the day it's finished and starts spreading at the edges within three or four winters.

Charcoal herringbone is the most requested finish on contemporary Crewe properties. Buff and brindle still perform better against older brick. Herringbone is also the strongest structural choice, because the interlocking angle spreads load across neighbouring blocks. Basketweave and stretcher bond both look good but neither holds up as well under a heavy vehicle turning on the same spot every day. Town centre terraces, roughly 15 to 25 square metres. Narrow frontages off Nantwich Road and the streets around the station. Space is tight, the kerb line matters, and a dropped kerb application to Cheshire East is often part of the job. Tarmac usually makes more sense here because a pattern has nowhere to read.
Post-war semis in Coppenhall and Haslington, roughly 25 to 40 square metres. Enough width for a car and a half. This is where block paving starts to earn its cost, particularly with a contrasting border course.
Newer estates towards Wistaston and Willaston, roughly 45 to 60 square metres. Standardised plots, double driveways, and the properties where people spend most on the front of the house. Block paving or tegula, almost always.

Usually not. If the surface is permeable, or if the water drains to a soakaway or lawn rather than straight onto the road, permitted development rights apply and no consent is needed. A solid impermeable surface over five square metres draining onto a public highway can require approval from Cheshire East Council, and conservation area properties have tighter rules. We design the drainage so this doesn't become your problem, and we'll tell you where you stand during the free site visit.
If there is no existing vehicle crossing, yes. Dropped kerbs in Crewe are handled by Cheshire East Council rather than the city council, and the application has to go in before any work starts on the footway. We will tell you at the quote stage whether you need one, what it involves, and we can carry out the crossing itself once the approval comes through.
Tarmac is £100 per square metre installed and block paving is £70 per square metre. A single driveway of 20 to 30 square metres works out at £2,000 to £3,000 in tarmac or £1,400 to £2,100 in block paving. A double of 45 to 60 square metres comes in at £4,500 to £6,000 in tarmac or £3,150 to £4,200 in block paving. Those figures include the sub-base, the surface, the edging and a dropped kerb where one is needed. Ground conditions, site access and the amount of muck that needs carting away all move the final number, which is why we come and look rather than quoting blind over the phone.
