Local driveway installers
Leek is not the same job as a flat estate in Stoke. The town sits on a hillside on the edge of the Peak District, the winters are colder and wetter, and a lot of driveways run uphill from the road. A driveway that would be fine in the Potteries can crack, sink or wash out here inside a few winters if the base and drainage are not done properly.
Maughan Construction have been laying driveways across North Staffordshire for over 30 years, and the Moorlands are a regular part of our patch. We are based in Stoke-on-Trent, under half an hour away, so you get a local team rather than a firm that only comes up the A53 when work is quiet. We install tarmac, block paving, tegula paving and patios, and we do all of our own groundwork. No subcontractors, and nothing to pay until the job is finished and you are happy with it.
We cover: the town centre, Ball Haye Green, Westwood, Haregate, Compton, Abbey Green, Cheddleton, Endon, Rudyard, Horton, Longsdon, Meerbrook, Upper Hulme, Bradnop, Ipstones, Wetley Rocks, Werrington and Rushton Spencer.
A straight answer, a fixed price and a team that turns up when it says it will.
Hard wearing and fast to lay
Tarmac is the surface we lay most often in Leek, and the reason is the hills. A sloping drive off Mount Road or up towards Ball Haye Green needs a surface that grips in the wet and sheds water quickly, and a properly compacted tarmac does both. It is also the most cost effective way to cover a long or awkward driveway, which a lot of Moorlands properties have.
The town sits higher than Stoke and gets harder frosts, so we do not cut corners on what goes underneath. Every tarmac driveway gets a dug-out base, a compacted Type 1 sub-base sized to the ground, a binder course and a wearing course, with edging to stop it spreading. On steeper drives we add a drainage channel at the bottom so the water ends up in a drain rather than in your garage.
Pattern and colour choice
Block paving gives you the most control over how the front of the house looks. On the newer estates around Westwood and Haregate, a charcoal herringbone with a contrasting border is the most requested finish. On the older brick semis closer to the town centre, buff and brindle blends tend to sit better against the walls.
Herringbone is also the strongest pattern for a hillside driveway, because the interlocking angle resists the creep you get when a car brakes and turns on a slope every day. We lay on a compacted sub-base and sharp sand bed, cut the edges clean, and set a concrete-haunched kerb so nothing moves. If you want the water to soak away rather than run onto the road, we can lay it as permeable paving.
Made for period and stone homes
Leek has more period stone and Victorian brick than most towns its size, from the old mill streets to the cottages out in Cheddleton, Rudyard and Meerbrook. A sharp modern block can look out of place against that. Tegula has a tumbled, weathered edge that looks like it has been there for years, which is why it is the surface we recommend most for older Leek properties.
As a Tobermore approved installer we can lay the full Tegula range, including the traditional cobble-style formats that suit a cottage frontage or a courtyard. It goes down on the same engineered base as our block paving, so you get the character of an old setts drive without the uneven, loose finish.
Outdoor space, done properly
A lot of gardens round here are on a slope, so a good patio here is as much about levels and drainage as it is about the stone. We build up or dig down to give you a properly flat, usable space, with a fall that takes rainwater away from the house and steps where they are needed.
Indian sandstone is the natural match for the gritstone and sandstone buildings in the town, and porcelain is the low maintenance option if you would rather not deal with moss on a north facing plot. Many customers book a patio alongside a new driveway, which saves on a second set of skips and machinery.
We have hundreds of happy customers
We have the most 5* reviews of any driveway company in Stoke-on-Trent and we are very proud of this fact!
Local knowledge
Three things we plan for on nearly every Moorlands job. Get these right and the driveway lasts. Get them wrong and it will not matter how good it looked on day one.

Common questions
The questions Moorlands homeowners ask us most before booking a new driveway or patio.
Tarmac is from £100 per square metre installed and block paving from £70 per square metre. A single driveway of 20 to 30 square metres is around £2,000 to £3,000 in tarmac or £1,400 to £2,100 in block paving. Steep gradients, tight access and extra drainage can move the price, so we give you a fixed written quote after a free site visit.
Usually not. If the surface is permeable, or the water drains to a soakaway or border rather than onto the road, it falls under permitted development. A non-permeable surface over five square metres draining onto the road needs consent from Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, and conservation areas and properties inside the Peak District National Park have tighter rules. We will tell you where you stand at the site visit.
Dropped kerbs in the Staffordshire Moorlands are approved by Staffordshire County Council, which looks after the roads and pavements, rather than the district council. The application needs to be approved before any work is done on the footway. We will tell you at the quote stage whether you need one and what is involved.
Yes, and up here it is a big part of what we do. We set the levels so cars do not catch at the kerb, use a surface that grips well in the wet, and fit a channel drain at the bottom to catch the run-off. Tarmac and herringbone block paving both perform well on a gradient.
Tarmac is the most popular choice for sloping and longer drives because it grips well and is cost effective over a large area. Block paving suits the newer estates where people want a pattern and colour choice. Tegula is our usual recommendation for stone cottages and period houses, because its aged finish fits with older buildings.
No. Every ST13 address is part of our normal area, along with Cheddleton, Endon, Rudyard and the surrounding villages. We are under half an hour away in Stoke-on-Trent and there is no travel charge. We do not take a deposit either: you pay once the job is finished.
Ask us anything. There is no obligation and no pushy follow up, just a straight answer from someone who has laid a thousand driveways.
