Resin bound driveways give you the look of natural stone with a smooth, solid finish and no loose gravel ending up on the pavement or in the house. A resin bound driveway is a mix of dried natural stone and clear resin, blended on site and trowelled flat by hand. It looks like gravel but it’s solid underfoot, and because it’s porous, rain drains down through it instead of running off onto the road.
People often mix it up with resin bonded. With resin bonded, a thin coat of resin goes down first and loose stone is scattered on top. It’s cheaper, but it isn’t permeable and the top stones wear away over time. We lay resin bound on driveways because it copes with cars turning and parking on it every day.
A resin surface is only around 18mm thick, so it shows every crack and dip in whatever it’s laid over. Most resin driveway failures come back to a poor base. On a new drive we dig out, put down a compacted permeable sub-base and finish with a porous asphalt layer before any resin goes near it.
Much of Stoke-on-Trent sits on heavy clay, which doesn’t let water away quickly. We check how your ground drains at the survey, and where it needs help we build a soakaway or channel drain into the quote so there are no surprises later.
If you already have a tarmac or concrete drive in sound condition, we can often lay resin straight over it. That cuts out the dig and brings the cost down. A solid base means the drive is no longer fully permeable, though, so we add drainage to keep it within planning rules. We’ll tell you straight on the survey whether your existing drive is good enough to build on.
The stone blend you pick makes the biggest difference to how the finished drive looks. On the red brick terraces around Longton and Burslem, a gold or bronze blend sits well against the brickwork. Newer houses in places like Trentham and Clayton often suit silver and grey tones. Borders in block paving, setts or a darker resin band give the edges a clean line and help break up larger drives.
We only use UV-stable resin. Cheaper resins yellow in sunlight, and it shows badly on lighter stone within a couple of summers.
Give it a sweep now and then and a low-pressure wash once or twice a year. Wipe up oil or fuel spills quickly so they don’t stain. Moss can build up on shaded drives over winter, and a stiff brush in spring usually shifts it.

Resin bound works on most properties in the Potteries, from a narrow terraced frontage in Hanley to a wide double drive in Trentham. It looks smart, handles daily car use and needs very little looking after once it's down.
Water drains straight through
Rain soaks through the stone and resin into the base below, so you won’t get puddles sitting on the drive or water running off towards the house. Because the surface is permeable, most front garden resin driveways don’t need planning permission.
No loose stones
Every stone is coated in resin and trowelled flat, so nothing gets kicked onto the road or carried indoors on your shoes. The tight surface also makes it much harder for weeds to get a hold.
Easy to maintain
A sweep and a low-pressure wash once or twice a year keeps it looking fresh. There are no joints to re-sand and no sealer to reapply every few years.

Free survey and quote
We visit, measure up and look at your existing surface, levels and drainage. You get a clear written quote with everything included, from groundwork to edging.
Groundwork and base
We dig out to the right depth, set the edging, and lay a compacted permeable sub-base with a porous asphalt layer on top. Where your existing drive is sound, we prepare and prime it instead.
Mixing and laying
Dried stone and resin are mixed in small batches in a forced-action mixer, then spread and trowelled by hand to an even depth. We only lay in dry weather above about 5°C, as resin won’t cure properly in the wet or cold.
Curing and handover
You can usually walk on the drive after a few hours and park on it after 24 to 48 hours, depending on the weather. Before we leave we walk the drive with you and go through the aftercare.

The price depends on the size of the drive, the state of the ground and whether we can lay over your existing surface. Laying over a sound tarmac or concrete base is cheaper than a full dig out. We give fixed written quotes after a free survey, and there’s no deposit to pay.
Often, yes. If your tarmac or concrete is solid, level and free from major cracks, we can prepare it and lay resin straight on top. If it’s breaking up or sinking, it needs replacing first, as any movement underneath will show through the resin.
Usually not. Resin bound is permeable, so front garden driveways normally fall under permitted development. If we lay over a solid base, we add drainage so it still complies. Listed buildings and some conservation areas have their own rules, so check with Stoke-on-Trent City Council if either applies to you.
Laid on a proper base with UV-stable resin, you can expect 15 years or more. How long it lasts comes down mostly to the base and the quality of the resin, which is why we don’t cut corners on either.
Resin bound mixes the stone into the resin before it’s laid, giving a smooth, porous surface. Resin bonded scatters loose stone onto a layer of resin, which leaves a rougher, non-permeable finish that sheds stones over time. We recommend resin bound for driveways.
