Local driveway installers
Congleton sits on the Cheshire side of the county line, but it is a short run from our Stoke-on-Trent yard, about half an hour up the A34. You get a local team with local prices, and the same crew that lays driveways across the Potteries every week.
The town is a real mix: Victorian mill terraces around the centre, 1960s and 70s semis in Buglawton and Mossley, and a lot of new build housing on the edges. The ground underneath is just as mixed, with heavy clay in places and low lying land along the River Dane. Maughan Construction have been laying driveways across North Staffordshire and South Cheshire for over 30 years, and we plan the base and the drainage around what is actually under your drive.
We install tarmac, block paving, tegula paving and patios, and we do all of our own groundwork. No subcontractors, and nothing to pay until the job is finished and you are happy with it.
We cover: the town centre, Buglawton, Mossley, West Heath, Lower Heath, Bromley Farm, Astbury, Timbersbrook, Hulme Walfield, Eaton, Somerford, Bosley, Marton, North Rode, Scholar Green, Rode Heath and Mow Cop.
A straight answer, a fixed price and a team that turns up when it says it will.
Tarmacadam, laid properly
Tarmac, or tarmacadam to give it its full name, is the hardest working surface we lay in Congleton. It suits the narrow frontages on the terraced streets around the town centre, where a single width drive with a neat dropped kerb is all most people need, and it is the most cost effective way to cover a long drive on the bigger plots out towards Astbury and Timbersbrook.
Plenty of ground in this part of Cheshire is heavy clay, which holds water and moves with the seasons. That is what cracks a thin tarmac drive. We dig out to firm ground, lay a compacted Type 1 sub-base to a depth that suits your soil, then a binder course and a wearing course, with solid edging so the surface cannot spread. Most drives are finished and usable within two days.
Pattern, colour and kerb appeal
Block paving is the most requested surface on the newer estates across Congleton, from West Heath to the homes that have gone up near the Link Road. Charcoal herringbone with a contrasting border is the finish we lay most on modern brick, while buff and brindle blends sit better against the older red brick semis in Buglawton and Mossley.
A lot of the new build homes we visit were handed over with a narrow drive laid by the developer. Widening it to a proper double with block paving is one of our most common jobs, and we match or replace the existing paving so the join does not show. Laid on a compacted sub-base with concrete haunched kerbs, it will not creep or sink, and a permeable version lets rainwater soak away so you avoid any planning questions.
Character for older homes
Congleton grew up as a silk mill town, and the Victorian streets close to the centre still have that character, as do the stone and brick cottages out in Astbury, Timbersbrook and up towards Mow Cop. A crisp modern block can look out of place against them. Tegula has a tumbled, weathered edge that looks as though it has been there for decades.
As a Tobermore approved installer we can lay the full Tegula range, from cobble style formats for a cottage frontage to larger setts for a farmhouse yard. It goes down on the same engineered base as our block paving, so you get the look of an old setts drive with none of the rocking or loose joints.
Outdoor space that drains
On clay ground the biggest problem with a patio is standing water. Slabs laid flat on a thin bed turn green, go slippery and start to rock within a couple of winters. We build every patio on a proper sub-base with a gentle fall away from the house, and add a drainage channel or soakaway where the garden needs one.
Indian sandstone is the most popular choice for a natural look, and porcelain is the low maintenance option if your garden faces north or sits in the shade. Many customers book a patio at the same time as a new driveway, which saves a second round of skips and machinery.
We have hundreds of happy customers
We have the most 5* reviews of any driveway company in Stoke-on-Trent and we are very proud of this fact!
Local knowledge
Three things we plan for on most jobs in this corner of Cheshire. Get these right and the driveway lasts. Get them wrong and it will not matter how good it looked on day one.

Work out a rough figure
Put in your measurements for a guide price. Your final quote depends on ground conditions and access, so treat this as a starting point rather than a fixed cost.
Get a rough idea of what your tarmac driveway could cost. Simply answer the questions below and we'll give you an instant estimate based on your driveway size and requirements. Please note this is a guide price only, and your final quote may vary depending on your specific site and circumstances.
Is your driveway an irregular shape? (For example, circular.)
Do you want to use coloured tarmac or have any unusual designs?
Do you want to have any edging?
Will you need an old driveway removing or excavation work carried out first?

Common questions
The questions South Cheshire homeowners ask us most before booking a new driveway or patio.
Tarmac is from £100 per square metre installed and block paving from £70 per square metre. A single driveway of 20 to 30 square metres is around £2,000 to £3,000 in tarmac or £1,400 to £2,100 in block paving. Soft ground, tight access and extra drainage can move the price, so we give you a fixed written quote after a free site visit.
Usually not. If the surface is permeable, or the water drains to a soakaway or border rather than onto the road, it falls under permitted development. A non-permeable surface over five square metres that drains onto the road needs consent from Cheshire East Council, and the town centre conservation area and listed buildings have tighter rules. We will tell you where you stand at the site visit.
Cheshire East Council handles dropped kerb applications through its highways team, and approval has to be in place before any work is done on the pavement. We will tell you at the quote stage whether you need one and what the application involves.
Not if the base is built for it. Clay holds water and moves between wet and dry seasons, which is what cracks and sinks a cheaply laid driveway. We dig out to firm ground, use a deeper compacted sub-base where the soil needs it, and add drainage so water is not left sitting under the surface. The depth we will use is written on your quote.
Yes, it is one of our most common jobs on the newer estates. We can extend a single drive to a double, match or replace the existing paving so there is no visible join, and lower the kerb if you need a wider entrance. If the developer laid the original drive on a thin base, we will tell you honestly whether it is worth keeping.
No. CW12 and the surrounding villages are part of our normal area and there is no travel charge. Our yard is around 30 minutes away, which is closer than a lot of Cheshire firms. We do not take a deposit either: you pay once the job is finished and you are happy with it.
Ask us anything. There is no obligation and no pushy follow up, just a straight answer from someone who has laid a thousand driveways.
