Your local driveway company
Our yard is on Park Hall Road in Longton, around twenty minutes down the A500 from Newcastle town centre. That makes the borough one of the places we work most, and a lot of our jobs here come from neighbours who saw a drive we laid further up the street.
The town does not have one type of house, so it does not have one type of driveway. A Victorian terrace in Wolstanton, a 1930s detached in Clayton and a converted barn outside Keele all need something different, from the levels and drainage to the surface and the edging. Below we have split the area into four parts and set out what we usually recommend in each.
Whatever you choose, the groundwork is the same: dug out to firm ground, a compacted Type 1 sub-base to a depth that suits your soil, and solid edging so nothing can spread. We do all of it ourselves, with no subcontractors, and you pay nothing until the job is finished and you are happy with it.

Which part of town are you in?
The housing changes a lot from one side of the borough to the other. This is what we find, and what we tend to lay, in each area.
ST5 2 • ST5 3 • ST5 4
1930s detached houses, wide bay fronted semis and larger family homes on generous plots.
The roads off Clayton Road and the Westlands tend to have the widest frontages in town, and that is where block paving does its best work. Charcoal herringbone with a contrasting border is the finish we lay most here, often with a split level or a turning area for a second car.
What we usually layBlock paving, tegula borders, tarmac with block edging
ST5 0 • ST5 8
Edwardian and Victorian terraces, red brick semis and some of the steepest drives in the borough.
Plenty of homes here sit above or below the road, so the fall of the drive matters as much as the surface. We set the levels so water runs away from the house, fit a channel drain across the threshold where it is needed, and use buff or brindle blocks that sit well against old Staffordshire red brick.
What we usually layBrindle block paving, tarmac, steps and retaining edges
ST5 6 • ST5 7 • ST5 9
Former mining terraces, post war semis and plenty of homes with no off road parking yet.
Most jobs on this side of the borough are about getting the car off the street at a sensible price. A single width tarmac drive with a neat block edge and a new dropped kerb is the usual brief. The ground here sits over old coal workings and heavy clay, so we never skimp on the sub-base.
What we usually layTarmac, first time drives, dropped kerbs
ST5 5 • ST7 • CW3
Village cottages, converted farm buildings and long rural drives off narrow lanes.
Out in the villages the drives get longer and the access gets tighter. Tarmac is the cost effective way to cover a long run up to a farmhouse, while tegula suits the stone and brick cottages in Madeley and Audley, where a crisp modern block can look out of place.
What we usually layLong tarmac drives, tegula, gravel to tarmac upgrades

Not with us. Block paving is from £70 per square metre installed and tarmac from £100, so a single drive of 20 to 30 square metres is around £1,400 to £2,100 in block paving or £2,000 to £3,000 in tarmac. Tegula, borders, steps and drainage all add to either, and your fixed price comes after a free site visit.
Dropped kerbs in the borough are approved by Staffordshire County Council as the highway authority, not the borough council. Approval has to be in place before anyone works on the pavement. We will tell you at the quote stage whether you need one and help you with the application.
Usually not. A permeable surface, or one that drains to a border or soakaway rather than the road, is permitted development. A non-permeable drive over five square metres that runs onto the road needs consent from Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, and listed buildings and conservation areas have tighter rules. We check this for you at the visit.
Yes. It is common in Wolstanton, May Bank and Porthill, where a lot of homes sit below the road. We reset the levels so water falls away from the house wherever possible, and fit a channel drain across the threshold where it cannot, so rain is carried to a gully or soakaway instead of your front door.
It can affect how the ground behaves, which is why we dig out to firm ground and build the sub-base to suit what we find rather than to a fixed depth. On clay or made up ground we go deeper and add drainage. The depth we will use is written on your quote, so you can compare it like for like with anyone else.
We normally visit within 48 hours of your enquiry and can often start within a few weeks, depending on the season. Tarmac drives take one to two days and block paving three to five. No deposit is needed to book your slot.
