Why Choose Tarmac Driveways?
A tarmac driveway gives you a strong, smooth surface that copes with daily vehicle use, needs very little looking after, and holds up against Staffordshire winters better than most alternatives. It is also the most cost-effective hard surface you can put down, which is why it remains the most common choice across Stoke-on-Trent.
Laid on a properly prepared sub-base, tarmac handles daily vehicle traffic and freeze-thaw cycles without shifting or cracking. Most driveways we lay across Stoke-on-Trent are still in good shape 15 to 20 years later.
Occasional cleaning and resealing every few years is all it takes. No jointing sand to top up, no individual blocks to lift and relay, and nothing that needs specialist treatment.
Most standard tarmac driveways are laid in one to two days. You get your driveway back quickly and your neighbours get their street back quickly, which matters on the tighter terraced streets around Hanley and Burslem.
At £100 per square metre installed, tarmac covers a larger area for less than block paving or natural stone. On a wide double driveway that difference runs into thousands.

Examples of our work
Maughan Construction are able to undertake any type of driveway renovation across Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire.
Maughan Construction install tarmac driveways across Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stafford, Crewe, Congleton, Biddulph and the surrounding parts of Staffordshire and Cheshire. Ted Maughan has been laying driveways for over 30 years and the business holds more than 435 five-star reviews, most of them from within twenty miles of the yard.
Tarmac is priced at £100 per square metre fully installed. That covers the excavation, the sub-base, the surfacing and the edging. A single driveway of 20 to 30 square metres works out at £2,000 to £3,000. A double of 45 to 60 square metres comes in at £4,500 to £6,000. Our tarmac driveway cost guide breaks down what moves those numbers up or down.
The surface is the part you see. The sub-base underneath is the part that determines whether the driveway lasts twenty years or five.
Stoke-on-Trent sits on heavy clay across much of the city, particularly around Bucknall, Meir and Blurton. Clay holds water, expands when it freezes, and pushes up through anything laid on an inadequate foundation. The older terraced streets in Hanley, Burslem and Tunstall bring a different problem: made ground from the pottery and mining years, which can be inconsistent within a single plot. We dig, check what we find, and specify the depth accordingly rather than laying the same 100mm everywhere and hoping.
Every quote we write states the depth of hardcore, how it will be compacted, and where the water is going. If a quote you have been given does not mention any of that, it is not a specification. It is a price.
If your existing driveway has a sound base but a tired surface, resurfacing is often the sensible option. We overlay onto the existing tarmac after cleaning and preparing it, which costs considerably less than a full dig-out and takes a single day. It only works where the foundation underneath is still solid, so we will tell you honestly if it is not. Our guide on when to repair versus replace a driveway covers how to tell the difference.
Standard black tarmacadam suits most properties, but red, green, buff and grey are all available and popular on properties where a plain black surface would look heavy. Red in particular works well against the red brick common across North Staffordshire. There is a full range in our guide to tarmac driveway colours.
We remove the existing surface where one is present and excavate to the correct depth for the ground conditions. The sub-base goes in and is compacted properly, not just rolled over once. Edging is fitted to define the driveway and hold the surface in place, because tarmac without edge restraint spreads at the perimeter within a few winters. The surface is then laid and compacted while hot to get an even, sealed finish, and left to cure before you drive on it.
Drainage is designed into the job from the start rather than dealt with afterwards. That matters for practical reasons and for planning reasons, which our guide to planning permission for tarmac driveways explains.

Our Process
Our proven process ensures a professional, long-lasting installation every time.
We remove the existing surface where needed and excavate to the right depth for the ground conditions on your plot, not a standard depth applied everywhere.
Hardcore is laid and compacted in layers to build a stable foundation that will carry vehicle weight through Staffordshire winters without settling.
Edging goes in first to restrain the surface and stop it spreading. The tarmac is then laid and compacted while hot for an even, sealed finish.
The surface is left to cure before use. Ted walks the job with you before anyone gets paid, and you pay nothing until you are happy with it.
Common Questions
Here are the most common questions we get asked about tarmac driveways in Stoke-on-Trent and across Staffordshire.
Tarmac is £100 per square metre fully installed. A single driveway of 20 to 30 square metres works out at £2,000 to £3,000, and a double of 45 to 60 square metres at £4,500 to £6,000. That includes excavation, sub-base, surfacing and edging. Ground conditions, access and how much material needs carting away all affect the final figure, which is why we quote after a site visit rather than over the phone.
Fifteen to twenty years before it needs resurfacing, assuming the groundwork was done properly. Almost every failed driveway we get called out to failed underneath rather than on top. Sealing it every few years and clearing standing water will push it towards the top of that range.
Most standard tarmac driveways are laid in one to two days. Light foot traffic is fine after 24 hours and you can park on it once it has fully set. Larger jobs, or ones needing significant drainage or kerbing work, take longer and we will tell you the timescale before we start.
Yes, provided the foundation underneath is still sound. Resurfacing overlays new tarmac onto the prepared existing surface, costs considerably less than a full replacement and usually takes a day. If the base has failed, an overlay will only hide the problem for a year or two, and we will say so rather than take the work.
Black is standard, but red, green, buff and grey are all available. Red is the most requested alternative across North Staffordshire because it sits well against local red brick. Coloured tarmac costs more per square metre than standard black, and we will price both so you can compare.
